1. Take Him Out to Eat

No matter the occasion, consider some of these unique restaurants when planning a celebration fit for a king.

  • Fireside Surf :: The Colony :: Enjoy the eclectic menu of this one-of-a-kind establishment. Grab a bite and watch as surfers of all levels catch some waves right in front of you.
  • IHOP :: Lewisville :: Kids under 12 can enjoy a free meal after 4:00 p.m. with the purchase of an adult entree. This offer is valid for dine-in only, so make plans to have breakfast for dinner one night.
  • Nerdvana :: Frisco :: Perfect for the gamer of any age in your group. This scratch-kitchen concept includes various game consoles that can be played at each table, including some retro options.

2. Let Him Enjoy Some R and R

Relaxation doesn’t have to be the reward for hard work, instead we can model for our kids how to prioritize self-care. Let’s begin to honor the idea of rest as a way to celebrate ourselves. Bonus, all of these ideas cost zero dollars.

  • Plan a movie marathon in the living room full of his favorite flicks.
  • Snooze the alarm and let him sleep in. He might get a big kick out of this, especially if it means he can stay up a little later than usual.
  • Because skin care isn’t just for girls anymore, your older son might appreciate a mom-made face mask straight from the fridge.

3. Give Him Something Sweet

Who doesn’t love an excuse for a little more sugar? Consider these options that make any celebration a little more tasty.

  • Gnome Cones :: Denton :: Be sure to visit this Denton staple. In addition to sno-cones, you can order snowballs and popsicles for delivery within a 20-mile radius of the Denton location.
  • It’s Sugar :: Grapevine :: If your sweet boy has a real sweet tooth, plan a visit to this candy store inside Grapevine Mills Mall. You won’t want to miss the selection of giant-sized candy options.
  • Mochinut :: Carrollton :: These delicious rice-flour pastries are a fun twist on donuts. Be sure to check out the flavors of the week.

4. Get Silly with Him

If your boy is anything like mine, being a little goofy is always a treat. No matter their age, they might appreciate mom being a little more silly than usual.

  • Grab your guy to head outside to play in the rain. Don’t be afraid to jump in the puddles or play in the mud.
  • Curate a music playlist that will get both of you dancing around the house.
  • Surprise him with something so out of the ordinary like a water balloon fight, or battle it out with nerf guns.

5. Take Him Outdoors

Fresh air and sunny skies are the perfect combination for a celebration al fresco. Consider these outdoor experiences that are fun for all ages.

  • Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center :: Denton :: This option includes hiking and mountain biking trails, hunting in some areas, and miles of walking trails for the avid sportsman in your life.
  • Resort Pass :: multiple locations :: Reserve cabanas or lounge chairs at some of the most exclusive hotel and resort pools at various price points for a day celebration.
  • Roanoke Skate Park :: Roanoke :: Grab his skateboard and head out to this public skatepark. This outing might be more fun with some friends in tow.

6. Buy Him a Gift

If time and energy are limited resources in this stage of life, don’t let mom guilt convince you that a thoughtful gift isn’t a celebration. These gifts are sure to make your son smile.

  • The gamer in your world may really appreciate credits or gift cards towards his favorite video game.
  • The trendy teen might be blown away with some new shoes or clothes.
  • The sporty son will definitely enjoy tickets to his favorite sporting event.

7. Take Him to Play Indoors

If your son is anything like mine, the energy is endless. Check out these local indoor play areas that might get him to bed a little earlier than usual.

  • Ninja Kidz Action Park :: Lewisville :: My favorite features are the sofas all around the open play area. You can sit anywhere and keep an eye on your kid.
  • Slick City :: Denton :: Similar to a trampoline park, one of Denton’s newest attractions is an indoor slide amusement park.
  • Stay N’ Play :: Flower Mound :: A perfect indoor play spot for younger children, it’s a one-stop shop for toddlers and preschoolers.

8. Recognize Him with Words

They say actions speak louder than words. But never minimize the power our words have when we use them to speak encouragement into the lives of our children. Here are some ways to make sure your son knows that you’re watching him.

  • Let him know you see his efforts.
  • Remind him that he’s loved.
  • Tell him when he makes you proud.

9. Preserve Special Moments

Our sons will always belong to us, but they don’t stay young forever. Cherish all of the celebrations by documenting and saving some of the most precious moments you’ll have.

  • Consider a session with a professional photographer for your older teen who might appreciate some headshots for college resumes and future internships and resumes.
  • When our boys were born, my husband started uploading all videos to a private YouTube account that only our family can access. Watching these memories on our TV is one of our favorite family pastimes.
  • Designate a place to keep all treasured art pieces, crafts, or school work in great condition to enjoy at a later time.

10. Do Some Good Together

In a world where it’s easy to think of ourselves, it might be extra special to do something together that focuses on helping others.

  • Cook his favorite meal together and deliver it to a neighbor
  • Add extra items to your cart at the grocery store to take to a local food pantry where you can also volunteer to sort items.
  • Grab a trash bag and some gloves, and plan to beautify a local park or greenspace in your community.

May there be lots to celebrate with the sons in your world.
